With the Super Bowl coming up tomorrow, what better place to go than Fat Cat's Oyster Bar and Grill in Lake Wylie? With wall to wall televisions tuned in to various sports networks, cold beer, and bar delicacies like quesadillas, chicken wings, blackened bologna chunks and sliders, what more could you ask for?
Whoa, hold the presses, blackened bolgona chunks?? Truly, I didn't see that on the menu when we visited a couple of weeks ago (I think I was overwhelmed by the atmosphere), but now that I see it on the take-out menu, I simply must go back. Not because I'm a die hard bologna fan, but because I've never seen the likes of THAT on a menu. Dang!
I'm a big believer in ordering whatever is in the restaurant's name (or reputation), at least the first time I visit. So if I go to a Sticky Fingers, I'm ordering ribs. Wild Wings - - wings! Fat Cat's Oyster Bar - - bring on the pearl makers. I figure if a restaurant is confident enough to feature a menu item in the name, it better be good.
Now, the second or third time I visit a restaurant, I might branch out, but that depends on the specialty of the restaurant. I can never conceive of going to Wild Wings and getting a chef salad.
Anyway, back to Fat Cat's. I ordered a dozen steamed oysters and shared an order of wings with my husband, who ordered the Flounder sandwich. Not knowing that wings are on special during football games, we were pleasantly surprised by the bill! Wooo hooo!
The oysters were served in the shell, and I was supplied with an oyster knife and a custom designed opening rack. The owner of Fat Cats designed the rack to make it easier to open the oysters. Pretty cool! He gave me a quick lesson, and I was good to go. Mmmm, mmm good.
My husband enjoyed his flounder sandwich. Fresh & crispy, perfectly accompanied by whatever was on draft.
We tried the bourbon wings, based on the recommendation of a neighbor. I think we would've like the traditional hot wings better, but that's just personal preference. The bourbon wings had a sweet hot sauce, and we prefer just plain hot.
I've learned that Fat Cat's often has bands perform, though probably not during football games. We'll go back - - next time with a group to maximize the fun and oyster consumption! I'm thinking an entire BUCKET of oysters, and maybe a side order of those blackened bologna chunks . . .
